Cisco Catalyst 5000 |
Cisco"s Catalyst 5000 Family which consists of the 5500 Series and the 5000 Series offers switching solutions focused on the needs of high performance wiring closets for large enterprises. The 5000 Family is also well suited for small and mid-range enterprise backbones. The Cisco Catalyst 5000 Family of switches is based upon proven Cisco switching technology that is being used in the largest campus networks in the world.
With integrated frame and cell switching, full support for Cisco IOS-based routing, full support for Fast EtherChannel, Gigabit EtherChannel, and ATM, the Catalyst 5000 Family is well positioned to evolve as campus bandwidth needs grow. Furthermore, the Catalyst 5000 Family supports data communication between any type of media. The media-independent architecture supports all legacy LAN and Asynchronous Transfer Mode (ATM) switching technologies through a wide range of Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Gigabit Ethernet, Fiber Distributed Data Interface (FDDI), Token Ring, and ATM switch modules.
All Catalyst 5000 Family switches support NetFlow switching as part of the architecture. NetFlow switching combines the simplicity and speed of switching with the intelligence and scalability of routing. This feature enables multilayer switching scalability. A route-switch module (RSM) delivers integrated support for Cisco IOS-based multiprotocol routing, and a NetFlow switching feature card option on Supervisor Engine III scales forwarding capacity to millions of packets per second.
Cisco"s Catalyst 5000 Family features five modular chassis: 2-, 5-, 9-, and 13-slot versions. All five chassis share the same set of interface modules and software features, providing scalability while maintaining interoperability and investment protection across all chassis.
The Cisco Catalyst 5000 Family consists of the following multilayer switching systems:
The Catalyst 5000 platform is a 5-slot chassis, and it will continue to serve as a platform supporting both wiring closet and data center applications. The five module slots support the required supervisor engine and four additional interface modules. The Catalyst 5000 supports all supervisor engines (including the NetFlow switching feature card option), and will support all new line cards as part of a complete solution.
High-speed connectivity between switches, switches and routers, and switches and servers is provided using standard 100/1000 Ethernet, FDDI, or ATM interfaces. Fast EtherChannel is supported on supervisor engine II ports and on Fast EtherChannel-capable line cards on which users can group up to four Fast Ethernet ports, providing up to 800 Mbps of load-sharing, redundant, point-to-point connections between Catalyst 5500, 5509, 5505, 5002, and 5000 switches. For higher bandwidth applications, users can deploy Gigabit EtherChannel which supports up to 8 Gbps (full-duplex) of inter-switch bandwidth. Gigabit EtherChannel is also support across the entire Catalyst 5500/5000 Series. Users can choose dual AC or DC power supplies for fault tolerance.

Users can choose dual AC or DC power supplies for fault tolerance. The Catalyst 5000 chassis fits into a standard 19-inch rack, and all system components are accessible from the same side of the chassis.
The Catalyst 5002 is a 2-slot chassis where one slot is used by the supervisor engine (supporting two built-in Fast Ethernet ports), and the second slot is used for any Catalyst 5000 Family module for Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Token Ring, FDDI, or ATM. The 5002 also supports all supervisor engines (including the NetFlow switching feature card option) and the Route Switch module.
The chassis has two built-in, redundant power supplies, and is designed to address the needs of smaller environments requiring Catalyst 5000 features and performance.
The Catalyst 5500, the 13-slot member of the Catalyst 5000 Family, serves as the high-end modular switching platform. With a gigabit Ethernet-ready architecture that scales to more than 50 Gbps and throughput of tens of millions of packets or cells per second (pps), the Catalyst 5500 provides the scalability, flexibility, and redundancy required for building large, switched intranets and can be used in both wiring closet and backbone applications.
At the same time, the Catalyst 5500 protects your investment in current Cisco products by seamlessly integrating existing Catalyst 500, Catalyst 8510 interface modules and features, and LightStream 1010 interface modules and features into the 5500 chassis.
With its support for hot-swappable modules, power supplies, and fans, the Catalyst 5500 delivers high availability for production networks. Dual redundant switching engines, power supplies, and a passive backplane design ensure full system redundancy for mission-critical environments.
The Catalyst 5505 is a high-performance, five-slot chassis for the evolving Catalyst 5500 Series. The Catalyst 5505 combines the size of the original Catalyst 5000 with the performance boost and added features of the Catalyst 5500. The Catalyst 5505 is ideal for high-performance wiring closet and data applications.
The Catalyst 5505 protects customers" Catalyst 5500 Series investments by seamlessly integrating existing Catalyst 5000 interface modules and features into a high-performance chassis. Customers who desire a performance boost for existing Catalyst 5000 chassis can redeploy all Catalyst 5500 Series line cards in the five-slot Catalyst 5505. Supervisor Engines II or III can also be used in a Catalyst 5505. The Catalyst 5505 can be configured for backbone applications with feature-rich, scalable 100/1000 Ethernet, ATM, and FDDI, as well as optional redundant Supervisor Engines and power supplies. In the wiring closet, switched 10/100 Ethernet, Token Ring, and ATM modules provide high-performance connectivity.
The Catalyst 5509 is the nine-slot member of the Catalyst 5500 Series that is ideally suited for both wiring closet and backbone applications. As a low cost wiring closet solution, the Catalyst 5509 supports high density, dedicated Token Ring or 10/100/1000 ethernet switching. The Catalyst 5509 can support high density switching with only a 15 Amp circuit requirement, allowing for easy installation in most wiring closet environments. The Catalyst 5509 also supports all of Cisco"s advanced features for the wiring closet, such as automatic protocol broadcast filtering to conserve valuable bandwidth, intelligent multicast forwarding to handle multimedia traffic, and load balancing over redundant links.
For Gigabit ethernet backbone applications, the Catalyst 5509 supports up to 38 ports of Gigabit ethernet, the highest port density available today for the Catalyst 5500 series. This capability can be combined with Cisco"s Gigabit EtherChannel technology. Gigabit EtherChannel technology enables multiple gigabit ethernet links to be treated as one logical link, for up to 8 Gbps (full duplex) of device-to-device throughput. Used in such a configuration, the Catalyst 5509 creates an industry-leading gigabit ethernet backbone solution to meet the requirements of today"s demanding and fast-growing enterprise intranets.
With its support for hot-swappable modules, power supplies, and fans, the Catalyst 5509 chassis delivers high availability for production networks. Dual redundant switching engines, power supplies, and a passive backplane design ensure full system redundancy for mission-critical environments. The Catalyst 5509 chassis fits into a standard 19-inch rack, and all system components are accessible from the same side of the chassis. Only one power supply is required to run a fully configured system.

Note
The following section describes software feature information for the Catalyst 5500 and 5000.
Enables two to four full-duplex Fast Ethernet links to be grouped together to form a single logical link or channel between devices that support Cisco`s Fast EtherChannel.
CGMP allows Cisco IOS routers to download to a Catalyst switch the identity of multicast clients as they join a multicast group. Using this information, multicast streams are switched to only those ports interested in the specific multicast traffic.
CGMP provides scalable, multicast distribution for all IGMP-capable workstations. CGMP allows Catalyst switches to provide wire-speed multicast delivery while preventing excessive flooding across switched ports within a VLAN.
With CGMP Fast Leave Processing the Catalyst 5000 can detect an IGMP V.2 host leave message and immediately prune ports from the specified multicast forwarding tree after a quick check to make sure that no other hosts on the interface need multicast traffic from that particular multicast group.
Allows the user to set a threshold level for broadcasts on a switch port. Additional broadcasts beyond that threshold rate are discarded.
Preserves network bandwidth by automatically throttling broadcast traffic to a preset level.
Cisco`s Catalyst switches run an instance of spanning tree on each defined VLAN for optimal path determination and link utilization.
Enables load balancing and efficient use of links in a switched internetwork through the distribution of VLANs across all available uplinks.
When redundant supervisors are present in a Catalyst 5500 Series chassis, the active supervisor automatically keeps the standby supervisor image and configuration synchronized.
Ensures fast, reliable switch over to a redundant supervisor in a Catalyst switch while minimizing any impact on network users or disruption to connectivity.
STP is an algorithm which runs in Catalyst switches to ensure full connectivity, optimal path selection, and loop avoidance in a layer 2 switched network topology.
Standards-defined protocol for avoiding network loops at layer 2 and activating redundant links when a primary link fails or a better path becomes available.
STP enhancement for user ports on a switch. Allows the port to go immediately into spanning-tree Forwarding state by bypassing Listening and Learning states.
Allows user ports to gain immediate access to the network and avoids loss of a client`s first transmitted frames, which are often used by NT and NetWare servers to establish server connections.
Allows the switch to dynamically assign ports to a VLAN based on the source MAC address of the hosts connected to a Catalyst switch port. Utilizes a new protocol, Virtual Query Protocol (VQP), which communicates with the VMPS to determine which VLAN a user`s switch port should be configured to.
Allows switch fabric to automatically configure user ports to the correct VLAN with no intervention from the network administrator. After a policy has been set up for a given user`s MAC address, that user may plug into any Catalyst 5000 switch carrying their VLAN and be automatically assigned to their VLAN for instant connectivity.
Virtual Membership Policy Server is a server process that manages a database of host source MAC address-to-VLAN mappings that enables a user`s workstation to be placed into the correct VLAN.
Inter-Switch Link is a VLAN multiplexing protocol that allows a single link to carry traffic for multiple VLANs between switches by becoming an ISL trunk.
Enables efficient distribution of VLAN traffic across a switched internetwork.
VLAN Trunking Protocol is a protocol that runs on Cisco Catalyst switches to ensure consistency of VLAN configuration between switches. VTP also dynamically maps VLANs across multiple LAN types with unique names and internal index associations. VTP2 extends this protocol to support Token Ring VLANs.
VTP greatly simplifies and helps avoid errors in the configuration of VLANs within the network. The dynamic mapping eliminates excessive device administration required from network administrators.
Allows the switch fabric to automatically prune the forwarding tree for VLANs in order to contain traffic from each defined VLAN to only those trunks that require this traffic.
Cisco Discovery Protocol is a "hello-based" Layer 2 protocol that allows network management applications and internetworking devices to learn important attributes about their neighbors and their capabilities.
Provides fast, efficient discovery of Cisco devices on the network.
The Simple Network Management Protocol provides a light weight protocol for network management stations to access and modify information in a switch. Management Information Base (MIB-II) provides an extensive list of standards-defined information objects or items within the switch.
Standards-based network management access to important switch configuration and monitoring information.
The embedded mini-Remote Monitoring (RMON) MIB provides the Statistics, History, Alarms, and Events groups with a virtual agent on every Ethernet, Fast Ethernet, Token Ring copper, and Token Ring fiber port in the Catalyst 5000.
Standards-based RFC 1757 RMON provides a very effective traffic analysis capability for each switch port. The Alarms and Events groups can be employed to create a powerful proactive management solution by automatically alerting a network administrator when preset thresholds are exceeded.
Provides an effective troubleshooting tool and traffic analysis aid for Catalyst switches while leveraging existing investments in external probes and network analyzers.
Multiple standard and enterprise-defined traps may be sent from the Catalyst 5000 when predefined system events occur.
Traps provide an efficient standards-defined SNMP-based mechanism for notifying network administrators of important system events.
Enables the Catalyst 5000 to internally log important events and to send syslog messages to a syslog daemon running on a management workstation for external logging.
Creates a flexible logging and tracking system for network administrators to obtain detailed event logs and save historical event data to spot trends and aid in troubleshooting their networks.
Dynamic Inter-Switch Link is an enhancement to Cisco`s ISL VLAN trunking protocol that allows neighboring switches to automatically configure ISL trunk links.
Automates network configuration and eliminates user errors from incorrect manual configuration.
The switch engine MIB enables configuration and/or monitoring of the following: Layer 3 switching engine cache aging mechanisms, active Layer 3 flows, Layer 3 switching performance, NetFlow Data Export, and protocol filtering
The memory pool MIB provides information on the amount of used and free DRAM on the active system Supervisor module
The entity MIB is an emerging standard MIB to provide information on system elements
This feature allows the Catalyst 5000 to block input to an Ethernet or Fast Ethernet port when the MAC address of a station attempting to access the port is different from the configured or learned MAC address for that port. Upon a violation the port is disabled, and a link-down trap is sent.
Provides a powerful and easy-to-configure security mechanism based on Media Access Control (MAC) address filtering on each switch port.
TACACS+ provides user authentication for access to the Catalyst 5000 system console by determining the identity of a user. Additionally, the Catalyst 5000 encrypts the user"s password using the MD5 encryption algorithm before transmitting it to the TACACS+ server for authentication.
Provides security for access to the Catalyst 5000 system console to ensure that only authorized personnel can configure critical networking devices.
Allows an administrator to create a list of permitted IP addresses or subnets to access the system console via Telnet and SNMP agent services. Can send an SNMP trap and log the event to the syslog table when an access attempt is denied.
Full RMON and RMON2 is available via the Network Analysis Module (WS-X5380)
Supports the following RMON groups:
RMON rising and falling thresholds can be set on, any integer-based MIB object in the Catalyst 5000 SNMP agent
Provides an effective notification mechanism via SNMP traps for any user defined event in the Catalyst 5000 that has a MIB object
